Moana 2 Smashes Box Office Records This Black Friday

This Black Friday, cinema-goers are flocking to theaters, pushing box office revenues to an all-time high, with "Moana 2" leading the charge as the weekend's biggest draw.

Black Friday has proven to be a blockbuster event, not just for retail but also for cinemas this year. With over $107 million projected to be spent at theaters today alone, the day is on track to become the second-highest grossing of 2024, following only July 26, when “Deadpool & Wolverine” brought in $118.3 million.

Leading the charge is Disney's highly anticipated sequel, “Moana 2”, which continues the tale of the adventurous Polynesian heroine. The film grossed $28 million on Thanksgiving Day and is expected to rake in $55 million by the end of Black Friday. Analysts predict it will surpass $175 million over the extended five-day weekend, with a possibility of breaking the $200 million barrier. The movie's stunning visuals, emotional storytelling, and beloved characters have clearly resonated with audiences of all ages.

Close on its heels is “Wicked,” the cinematic adaptation of the Broadway sensation. It pulled in $16.9 million on Thanksgiving and is tracking $27 million for Black Friday. The musical fantasy is poised to earn $105 million over the holiday weekend, cementing its status as a crowd favorite.

Meanwhile, “Gladiator II” has carved out its niche, grossing $6.7 million on Thanksgiving and heading toward $12.6 million today. Despite being overshadowed by the other two blockbusters, it remains a solid contender with a $45 million five-day projection.

The box office isn't expected to slow down anytime soon. Heavyweights like “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” are slated for December 20 releases, each predicted to debut with $50+ million.

This holiday season highlights the power of diverse storytelling, offering audiences everything from animated adventures and musical magic to historical epics.

The overwhelming success of “Moana 2” reflects not just the enduring appeal of Disney's animated masterpieces but also the strategic timing of its release. Black Friday provides the perfect storm of family outings and holiday spirit, making cinemas a natural destination.

While “Wicked” capitalizes on Broadway nostalgia and “Gladiator II” delivers an epic punch, “Moana 2” stands out for its ability to connect emotionally across generations. The sequel builds on its predecessor's legacy, combining stunning animation, heartfelt moments, and catchy songs that leave audiences humming long after the credits roll.

Still, it's fascinating to see how these titles will fare in the coming weeks against December's heavy hitters. The competition will be fierce, but such diversity ensures there's something for everyone at the box office.
