Terence Davies to Direct MOTHER OF SORROWS Big-Screen Adaptation

Terence Davies

English filmmaker Terence Davies, which works are notable for their measured pace, is currently developing a feature adaptation based on Mother of Sorrows, the novel by American Richard McCann. McCann’s novel tells the story of two brothers growing up in 1950s,  dealing with the death of their father in the shadow of their complex and glamorous mother. Mother of Sorrows presents ten interwoven stories of an American family life in the post-World War II suburbs of Washington D.C, a world of identical brick houses and suns-truck, treeless lawns. Davies said:
This is an important story because it touches the humanity in all of us. I love the delicacy of the book and its gentle odyssey from post-World War II optimism for the American utopia to a deeper understanding of both maternal and filial love and an acceptance of mortality by surrendering to the light.
Davies’ previous film credits include the acclaimed Distant Lives, Still Voices, The House of Mirth and Of Time and the City. His movies are warm and straightforward and driven by a strong personal interest. Davies most recently returned to fiction film with The Deep Blue Sea, starring Rachel Weisz, which closed the 2011 London Film Festival. He will next shoot his long-gestating adaptation of classic Scottish novel Sunset Song, written by Lewis Grassic Gibbon in 1932.
