Vivienne and Holger meet in San Francisco and decide to start a life together, moving to Holger's home near Elk Flats, Nevada.
However, the outbreak of the Civil War separates them when Holger decides to join the Union Army to fight. While Holger is away at war, Vivienne is left to fend for herself in the town, which is controlled by the corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) and his business partner rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garrett Dillahunt).
Jeffries' violent son Weston (Solly McLeod) aggressively pursues Vivienne, who resists his advances.When Holger finally returns from the war years later, both he and Vivienne have changed, and they must confront the challenges their relationship now faces.
