Yorgos Lanthimos’ Next Is THE LOBSTER!
Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is officially unstoppable! If you thought that his previous films Dogtooth and Alps are (still) synonyms for weird, then I have a little warning for you: get ready for The Lobster!
Remember that title, because that will be Lanthimos' next – a story about love, without being a conventional love story (like anything conventional is possible with this guy…) in which BEING SINGLE IS ILLEGAL!
At this moment we know that The Lobster script comes from Efthymis Filippou (and who else?) and that the movie will observe the ways and reasons certain people come together to form couples, while others don't. (Wait, I actually like this part of the story!)
But, on the other hand, it is also a story about the terrifying effects of solitude, the fear of dying alone, the fear of living alone and, above all, the fear of living with someone. (Ok, I definitely hate this part of the story!)
But, in case you want even more details about this story, here's an official synopsis:
“An unconventional love story set in a dystopian near future where single people, according to the rules of the Town, are arrested and transferred to the Hotel. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days.
If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into the woods. A desperate Man escapes from the Hotel to the Woods where the Loners live and there he falls in love, although it's against their rules.”
Anyway, let us also add that The Lobster will be Lanthimos' first English language production, but – at this moment the project has just 25,000 Euros in place on a 1.9 million Euro budget.
Still, director is quite optimistic about the whole thing and is hoping to shoot in 35mm throughout the UK and Ireland.
Good luck Lanthimos, we definitely expect to hear more about The Lobster as soon as possible!
