“Sex and the City” Dominates Weekend Box Office

“Sex and the City” has beat off competition from Indiana Jones to become the number one movie at the US box-office last weekend. The film, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, took a huge $55.7 million from 3,285 theaters across North America, to become the top opening R-rated comedy of all time, beating 1999’s American Pie.
“We’ve been waiting years for this,” says Patricia Ackerman, 42, who went with four girlfriends dressed more like they were headed to a premiere than a Saturday matinee. “This is our Indiana Jones.”
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull” was knocked into second place, dropping 54% of its take from its first weekend, a still respectable $46 million. The Steven Spielberg directed film has now taken a little over $216 million after just over a week of being on release.
Horror flick “The Strangers“, which stars Liv Tyler, opened at number three taking $20.7 million, its success following great word-of-mouth while “Iron Man” held on in at number four with another $14 million under it’s iron belt.
‘Sex And The City’ UK Box Office Report

“Sex And The City” had a stellar opening in the UK yesterday, taking $4.1m (£2.1m) across 453 sites on its first day.
The film, which saw crowds of female fans waiting in long queues outside of London cinemas to get a first glimpse of the anticipated film, enjoyed a $9,004 (£4,563) screen average, beating out Indiana Jones‘ first day screen average last week of $8,114 (£4,119). Indy’s first day takings took $4.4m (£2.2m) from 534 sites last Thursday (May 22).
Takings for Sex And The City, released in the UK through Entertainment Film Distributors, could have been helped by the fact that there are school holidays this week in the territory and, due to a 15 rating, was able to harness a slightly younger female crowd.
Elsewhere, the film took nearly $800,000 in France, where it is released through Metropolitan, taking its total to $4.8m on its first day. It opens today in Germany and Singapore and Friday (May 30) in the US and Italy.

Karen Allen Interview - June Issue of ‘More’ magazine
She was the first crush of a million boys, the spunky role model for a generation of girls. As Marion Ravenwood, the game-for-anything heroine of 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, Karen Allen threw punches, drank burly men under the table and even managed to look good in a fussy white dress with a big flower on her backside.
On May 22nd, at 56, she’s reprising her iconic role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. She’ll also be on the June cover of ‘More‘, on newsstands May 20th, discussing what she’s been up to since her first turn at Marion, what it’s like to do an action movie at 56 and more.
These are excerpts from the June issue of ‘More’:
“What’s funny is that his [Steven Spielberg] wife, Kate Capshaw, had just bought a lot of my knitwear for Christmas presents. I though he was going to tell me he loved the presents! He said, ‘Haven’t you been watching television? We’re doing another film, and you’re in it.’ And it wasn’t a cameo, it was a big, beautiful part and I was jumping up and down,” Karen said.
”On the first day of filming, she and Ford, who turned 65 during the shoot, had to leap from the back of a moving truck into its cab. “Harrison and I were laughing in between takes, saying ‘Here we go again.’ It just felt really seamless.”
“Now, we’ve all grown up, we all have kids: Steven has seven children; Harrison has several families. As a younger actor, I had a harder time enjoying the process. I was so serious about it all, there was more ego involved. I’d never worked on big action things where you spend you entire day navigating through snakes or having corpses fall on your head, and I was overwhelmed.”
“Karen has this sort of girlish streak to her, even as a mature woman. And yet it’s not a coy thing. It’s not a weak thing. She has a sense of adventure,” Harrison Ford noticed.
On the first day of filming, “there I was in a fedora and a leather jacket and she showed up up looking like the Karen of old. Or of young.”

Indiana Jones Tops Hero Poll
Actors Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford have been voted the greatest ever action heroes. Around a quarter of the 3,000 people polled remembered Ford fondly as Han Solo in Star Wars and swashbuckling archaeologist Indiana Jones, a role he takes up again later on this year - for the fourth time.
Willis also set the standard in the 1980s, as John McClane in Die Hard, a role he reprised for the fourth time last year.
Third place was taken by Last Action Hero star Arnold Schwarzenegger, with 15 per cent of the vote.
Newer breeds of action hero Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, and Daniel Craig as James Bond, achieved fourth and fifth-equal places in the poll.
Craig tied with Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal and Mel Gibson in joint fifth place with 5 per cent each. Read the rest of this entry
