Pawel Pawlikowski, who won BAFTAs as most promising newcomer for debut feature Last Resort and the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film in 2005 with My Summer of Love, adapts Douglas Kennedy’s novel The Woman in the Fifth.
Ethan Hawke stars as a college lecturer who relocates to the City of Light to win back the love of his estranged wife and daughter. Living in a shady hotel, he begins an affair with a mysterious woman of the Fifth arrondissement, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, before a series of events threaten him and his daughter.
A former documentarian Pawlikowski films the underside of Paris making precise records of much photographed city that appears wholly new and much less than attractive — a vision perfectly aligned with a dark story in a disquietingly menacing way.
The psychological thriller The Woman in the Fifth will be released through Artificial Eye in theaters nationwide on June 15th, 2012.
