The film's heroine, Katniss Everdeen, portrayed by “X-Men: First Class” and “Winter's Bone” actress
Jennifer Lawrence, is a teenager who volunteers to take her younger sister's place in a cruel competition of children forced to fight to the death for the amusement of the wealthy and the political gain of the powerful.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.
