Netflix has unveiled its first look at Oscar-nominated actor Barry Keoghan in the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie, suggesting his character may be aligned with Tommy Shelby's notorious gang. The film, which began production last month, marks a significant expansion of the beloved BBC series universe.

The project brings together an impressive ensemble cast, with Cillian Murphy reprising his iconic role as Tommy Shelby. New additions include Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Jay Lycurgo, while series regulars Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, and Ian Peck return to their respective roles.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film promises to continue the gripping narrative that captivated audiences throughout the series' run. Series creator Steven Knight returns as screenwriter, while Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the show's first season, takes the helm as director.

Murphy, who recently garnered acclaim for his role in “Small Things Like These,” has expressed enthusiasm about returning to the character that defined his career, stating, “It seems Tommy Shelby wasn't finished with me.” His commitment to the project, alongside the declaration that it's “one for the fans,” suggests a thoughtful continuation of the Shelby saga.

The film maintains strong connections to its television roots while potentially expanding its scope for the big screen. The World War II setting represents a significant time jump from the series, promising new challenges and dynamics for the Shelby family.

The casting of Barry Keoghan, known for his complex and often unsettling performances, appears to be a masterful choice for the Peaky Blinders universe. The combination of established talent and fresh faces, coupled with the World War II setting, suggests an ambitious evolution of the story rather than a mere continuation. The retention of key creative personnel, particularly Steven Knight, indicates a commitment to maintaining the series' distinctive tone and quality.

How do you think the World War II setting will impact the Shelby family's dynamics and power structure in Birmingham?
