The Lifeguard is set to hit theaters this August. That’s the first thing you should know about Liz W. Garcia‘s coming-of-age story for our times. Described as wry, sexy, entertaining, and bittersweet indie drama, it stars lovely Kristen Bell as a reporter who leaves her life in New York City to go back home to get her high school job as a lifeguard. What’s dramatic about that? I have no idea, we’re still waiting for the first trailer, but until it arrives – head inside to check out the poster and some
Written and directed by Garcia, the movie revolves around Bell’s character: a whip-smart former valedictorian on the verge of 30, named Leigh, who is living a seemingly perfect life in New York.
When her work aspirations and love life suddenly come crashing down, she hightails it back to the cocoon of the Connecticut suburb where she grew up.
The rest of the story goes like this:
Picking up right where her teen halcyon days left off, she moves into her old room with her parents, reunites with her bosom buddies who never left town, and steps back into her high school job as a condo-complex lifeguard. As she takes a transgressive journey back to adolescence, including entering into a forbidden affair, Leigh’s bold flirtation with disaster triggers a ripple effect all around her.
Beside Bell, The Lifeguard cast also includes Mamie Gummer, Martin Starr, Alex Shaffer, Amy Madigan, Joshua Harto and David Lambert, and as we mentioned at the beginning, the movie is set to hit theaters on August 30th, 2013.
