Olivia Thirlby Joins Judge DREDD

Olivia Thirlby

Few weeks ago we reported that Karl Urban will be playing Judge Dredd in the upcoming Pete Travis' movie. Today, we're here for a little casting update, because we just learned that lovely Olivia Thirlby will play Judge Cassandra Anderson, who, according to the script, is “a telepathic rookie who shadows Dredd.” So, we all know that this character didn't appear in the previous Judge Dredd movie, which, back in 1995, starred Sylvester Stallone. But, this time, the story will center on a future where “officers of a special police unit are given the sole power of being judge, jury and executioner to whomever they deem to be criminal.” We previously reported that Judge Dredd will not be taking off his helmet in the new version. Let us also remind you what producers of the movie, Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich shared with us: “The main thing about Judge Dredd is that it's a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we've got to get the tone right. He's not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real.” Alex Garland wrote the script, and the budget has been set at $45 million. Movie will start filming in South Africa sometime later this year. We can all expect to see the new Judge Dredd in 2012.
