Predator Turns Hero in the Groundbreaking ‘Predator: Badlands’

Discover how Predator: Badlands redefines the franchise, featuring a heroic Predator, complex family dynamics, and Elle Fanning in dual roles, all under Dan Trachtenberg's visionary direction.

The Predator franchise is taking an unprecedented turn with Predator: Badlands, where the titular creature steps into the spotlight as a hero. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (Prey), the film promises to expand the boundaries of the iconic series, delivering a mix of emotional depth and thrilling action.

Announced earlier this year, Predator: Badlands reunites Trachtenberg with Prey screenwriter Patrick Aison. The film, set in a futuristic timeline, explores the intricate bond between twin sisters Thia and Tessa, portrayed by Elle Fanning. The characters' opposing paths—one driven by curiosity and the other by militant resolve—form the emotional core of the narrative.

Trachtenberg's bold decision to make the Predator the protagonist marks a fresh direction for the franchise. “The creature is front and center, leading the charge,” Trachtenberg shared with Empire. While retaining its ferocity, the Predator will also evoke empathy, challenging viewers to root for a character often seen as a menace.

Production began in New Zealand this summer, with Trachtenberg aiming to replicate the spiritual success of Prey. The director describes Badlands as a “groundbreaking” film that dares audiences to cheer for its titular hero.

Adding to the excitement, Trachtenberg is working on an animated Predator anthology, set to premiere before Badlands hits theaters in 2025. This ambitious project solidifies his role as a creative force within the franchise.

As Predator: Badlands ventures into uncharted territory, it promises to captivate long-time fans and newcomers alike. With a compelling storyline, a stellar cast, and innovative storytelling, it's a cinematic event worth anticipating.

Dan Trachtenberg's vision for Predator: Badlands intrigues me, particularly his approach to presenting the Predator as a complex, empathetic character. Shifting the focus from humans to the alien itself adds depth to a franchise often defined by its straightforward action.

Elle Fanning's dual roles are another highlight, showcasing a compelling dynamic between two contrasting sisters. This layered narrative could provide a fresh emotional core for the series. However, taking such a bold creative risk may polarize audiences, especially purists who prefer the franchise's classic tone.

Overall, I'm optimistic. Trachtenberg's track record with Prey and his innovative ideas suggest Badlands could become a standout entry in the Predator saga.
