Russell Crowe wish to portray the late stand-up comedian Bill Hicks on the big screen looks like that passion will continue behind the camera.

Well, Crowe is reportedly teaming up with his old schoolmate and the film’s screenwriter Mark Staufer, who wrote the script.

No doubt that Crowe is a big Bill Hicks fan, but production on this so-far untitled Hicks project could start as soon as early 2013 with Crowe making his directorial debut behind the camera.

As you might know Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 when he was just 32 (the 48-year-old Crowe is a bit past taking the role himself) and already was the subject of a documentary titled American: The Bill Hicks Story.

Staufer said:

Bill Hicks’ life is tragically short, but spectacularly interesting. The screenplay has gone through a number of drafts and we’ll go into production early next year.

There’s still no word on casting for the role of Hicks, but we hear what we expect to hear and therefore, I heard the name of UK actor Chas Early, who played Hicks in the 2004 one-man show Bill Hicks: Slight Return; after all, Hicks had more commercial success in UK during his life than he did in America.

So share your own thoughts below on who should play Hicks.
