Get ready to revisit the swamp because DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that Shrek 5 will be gracing our screens on July 1, 2026. After a long 16-year wait since the last installment, Shrek Forever After, fans can finally rejoice as the beloved green ogre returns with his friends for another whimsical adventure.

The excitement doesn't stop there. The original voice cast, including Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey), is set to reprise their iconic roles. This announcement has sparked a wave of nostalgia and anticipation among fans who grew up with these characters. The teaser, which you can find by clicking here, gives a sneak peek into the magic that's to come.

Walt Dohrn, who previously worked on Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After, will be co-directing Shrek 5 alongside Brad Ableson, known for his work on Minions: The Rise of Gru. Their combined expertise promises to bring a fresh yet familiar feel to the fifth installment.

Eddie Murphy, in a recent interview with Collider, confirmed that production is well underway. “I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie,” he shared. Murphy later clarified that the Donkey spinoff will follow after the release of Shrek 5.

DreamWorks has teased the possibility of a fifth Shrek movie over the past decade, but it wasn't until 2023 that solid reports of the original cast returning emerged. Alongside the main series, the franchise has expanded with spin-offs like Antonio Banderas' Puss in Boots and its 2022 sequel, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

The Shrek series has always been known for its star-studded cast, which includes John Lithgow as the scheming Lord Farquaad, John Cleese as King Harold, and Jennifer Saunders as the Fairy Godmother. With such a talented ensemble returning, Shrek 5 is poised to deliver the humor, heart, and adventure that fans have come to love.

Mark your calendars for July 1, 2026, and prepare to be swept away once again into the enchanting world of Shrek.
