Mo'Nique Spirit Awards

They all say this show changed a little bit, but we guess it was expected for the 25th annual ceremony from Stapless Center, or if you prefer – the Spirit Awards.

Last week we were all occupied with Oscar, but it’s always the right time to take a look at (maybe) less popular ceremony, but still – the good one! We’re going to remind you of this ceremony highlights.

The Hurt Locker

Where will you be on March 7th? Are you guys ready for the 82nd Academy Awards? Filmofilia is right here to remind you that glamorous red carpet has never been closer! Concurrence is very tough, especially because of the fact that this year, instead of traditional five, we have exactly ten movies that will fight for this prestige award. Nominations came, and nobody was surprised…

The adventures of Jake Sully, as we all expected, went very well. Avatar won nine nominations so we guess that James Cameron has a lots of reasons to be satisfied! He’s biggest wish, as he said, was to give people movie, that will make them have a feeling they lived Avatar during the cinema projection. Guess he’s wish came truth, since the movie won  a whole bunch of “technical” nominations. Among them, Avatar managed to win nomination for the best movie, and Cameron could go home with statue for the best director. Seems like excited action is moving from Pandora to Los Angeles, but this time without virtual cameras.

Precious “Precious” Poster

Precious

We’ve got a new poster for Lionsgate‘s Sundance 2009 hit “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire“.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe In Precious

Winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, Lee Daniels’ “Precious: based on the novel “Push” by Sapphire” will be shown in UN CERTAIN REGARD at Cannes Film Festival. This is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome.

With sheer audacity and utter authenticity, director Lee Daniels tackles “Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire” and creates an unforgettable film that sets a new standard for cinema of its kind. Precious Jones (Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe) is a high-school girl with nothing working in her favor. She is pregnant with her father’s child – for the second time. She can’t read or write, and her schoolmates tease her for being fat.
