Tarantino Shares Thoughts On THE LONE RANGER, Ben Affleck As Batman & More

Last week, Quentin Tarantino revealed a list of his 10 favorite films of 2013 thus far, but in a recent interview with French weekly publication Les Inrockuptibles, he shares his criticisms of the Johnny Depp western and brief thoughts on his top ten.

He also added a comment to the discussion on the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman.

Tarantino stood by his decision to put The Lone Ranger on his Top 10 list:

The first forty-five minutes are excellent…the next forty-five minutes are a little soporific. It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene—incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, ‘What, that's the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?

He does have drowned some criticism for the film, however:

It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares… I like Tonto's backstory—the idea that his tribe got slaughtered because of him; that's a real comic-book thing. But the slaughter of the tribe, by gunfire, from the cavalry, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. The Indians have really been victims of a genocide. So slaughtering them again in an entertaining movie, Buster Keaton style… That ruined the fun a bit for me. I simply found it…ugly.

As for the other films on his list filmmaker says Frances Ha reminded him of a Paul Mazursky film, noting that This is the End is ‘the funniest film of the year, by far' and that The Conjuring is the first James Wan movie that he's liked and for Kick-Ass 2, he says Jeff Wadlow ‘wrote and directed it with a real auteur approach'.

It should be mentioned that the French publication swaps out Fruitvale Station for Gravity.

Tarantino also shared his non-opinion on Ben Affleck playing Batman in the Man of Steel sequel:

I have to admit that I don't really have an opinion. Why? Because Batman is not a very interesting character. For any actor. There is simply not much to play. I think Michael Keaton did it the best, and I wish good luck to Ben Affleck. But, you know who would have made a great Batman? Alec Baldwin in the '80s.

Stay tuned for an updated version of the list over the next few months.

    Hi,

    I liked your paper.
Although, I have to tell you that it is not the French publication that swapped the two films. It is Tarantino himself that decided to change it, between the interview he had with Les Inrokuptibles and the list he made the next day.

Regardless of what you think of Tarantino as a director, why would anyone care what he thinks of Affleck as Batman?
