A German-American film director, producer, and former commercial, and music video director, in short, Marcus Nispel, is returning to the horror genre – he will next helm the horror flick Backmask.
New horror project is based on an idea by Nispel himself, whose recent features include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.
Kirsten Elms, writer of Gold Circle is writing the script. Nispel likes to keep his cards close to his vest, allowing only that the flick involves paranoia, possession and the paranormal.
The film will be produced by horror guru Steven Schneider, one of the creators behind the Paranormal Activity films, as well as the haunted kid horror movie Insidious and the upcoming eco-horror thriller The Bay, directed by Barry Levinson, from a script he co-wrote.
In Backmask, during a sex, drugs, and rock-fueled party, six small-town teenagers find an old vintage record and decide to play it backwards in order to listen for any subliminal/satanic messages. Lo and behold, a seemingly malevolent spirit quickly infiltrates the group, wreaking havoc as it moves from one body to another. Eventually, however, it's revealed that the spirit in question is actually trying to convey a message and that the real source of horror isn't particularly paranormal, but rather something much closer to home.
So, this is going to be something like a standard horror movie.
Principal photography begins on July 13.
As for a reboot of the Conan the Barbarian, Nispel revealed that this was his childhood dream project. After Brett Ratner was off the project, Nispel took the reins as director to the film June 2009.
The film will be released on August 19, 2011.
