Zach Cregger’s Weapons Moves Up to 2025 Release Amid High Hopes

Zach Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian—the multi-storyline horror film Weapons—has been moved up to a 2025 release after rave test screenings, signaling high expectations from Warner Bros.

Zach Cregger made waves in 2022 with Barbarian, a low-budget horror hit that grossed big at the box office while earning critical acclaim. His next film, Weapons, was originally slated for release in January 2026 but has now been rescheduled to a 2025 release. The decision reflects Warner Bros.' confidence in Cregger's growing reputation as a major force in modern horror.

Weapons is a highly anticipated project that builds on Cregger's reputation for bold storytelling. Described as a multi-storyline horror thriller in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, the film explores a chilling mystery: children in a small town mysteriously vanish after walking out of their homes in the dead of night. The story unfolds from the perspectives of various characters, including a teacher, a detective, and a family, while weaving supernatural elements such as witchcraft into its narrative.

The move to advance the release reflects Warner Bros.' belief in the film's potential. Reports from The InSneider indicate that the movie has performed exceptionally well in test screenings. Warner Bros., which acquired the rights to the film for a significant eight-figure sum during a heated bidding war, views Weapons as a cornerstone of their horror lineup and a vehicle to solidify Cregger's standing alongside luminaries like Jordan Peele, Ari Aster, and Robert Eggers.

The cast features an impressive lineup, including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Brian Tyree Henry, and Benedict Wong. Brolin, known for his selective approach to roles, described the script as “a brilliant design,” adding to the film's buzz.

With its ambitious structure, star-studded cast, and Cregger's rising star in the horror genre, Weapons could become a landmark entry in modern horror cinema. If it lives up to expectations, this film might firmly establish Zach Cregger as one of the genre's leading voices.

My Impressions: Weapons seems poised to be an innovative addition to the horror genre. The multi-perspective storytelling combined with supernatural themes could offer a refreshing break from conventional narratives. While Barbarian set a high standard, Weapons appears ready to exceed those expectations. Cregger's growth as a filmmaker, coupled with an A-list cast, suggests this film could cement his reputation as a master of suspense and innovation.

What are your expectations for Weapons? Could Zach Cregger's unique narrative style redefine modern horror, or do you think he still has more to prove?
