CBS Plans New Gunsmoke Movie

Allan Ford September 12, 2011 10 comments
GunsmokeThe classic western TV series “Gunsmoke,” that ran for 20 seasons, is being rebooted as a feature for CBS Films. James Arness, Milburn Stone and Amanda Blake led the cast of the TV version. CBS has tapped Gregory Poirier (“National Treasure: Book of Secrets”) to write the script. The action-adventure will re-imagine Marshal Matt Dillon, the hero of the classic Western, for modern audiences. According to Risky Biz Blog, the movie will still be set in the Old West but will have a more “contemporary look” and modern action.

    Awesome Idea!
James Arness would be proud to see a movie for the big screen based on the old Gunsmoke series.
My boys ages 8 and 12, love the old tv series and can’t wait to see the new movie!

There are certain elements to the original series, specialy the first ten years, that must be maintained. Dillon HAS TO BE A BIG MAN!! His demeanor must remain the same. Liam Niesan might have been a good choice but he may now be too old for the part. In this age, his relationship to Kitty Russell can be “spiced up” some. There was a reason this series ran for 20 years. Your main audience is going to be “baby-boomers”. Don’t let them down!!

Ummm… contemporary look and modern action? Please don’t ruin a great classic!!! If you can’t do it justice by making it as it once was then LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE!!! Don’t kill it by over complicating it.

Chris Hemsworth 6’5″ would make a great Matt Dillon. I thought of Liam Neeson, too, but probably need a younger actor. Who would be good for Miss Kitty, Doc and Festus?
