Fans of sensual cinema, prepare yourselves for an intriguing cinematic experience. Audrey Diwan, the acclaimed director who won the Golden Lion for “Happening,” is back with a fresh take on the classic erotic drama “Emmanuelle.” The first trailer for this highly anticipated film has just been released, offering a glimpse into a provocative world where desire ebbs, flows, and evolves.

Based on Emmanuelle Arsan's beloved novel, “Emmanuelle” was first adapted into a film in 1974. Diwan's version, however, promises a new vision of this timeless story. The film stars French actress Noémie Merlant, known for her captivating performances, as Emmanuelle, a woman on a journey of sexual discovery in Hong Kong. Merlant is joined by a stellar cast including Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, Jamie Campbell Bower, Chacha Huang, and Anthony Wong, each bringing depth to this sensual narrative.

The storyline follows Emmanuelle, who embarks on a solo business trip to Hong Kong, a city brimming with sensuality and allure. During her stay, she engages in numerous encounters, including with Kei, a man who continually eludes her. This exploration of intimate desires and fleeting pleasures is crafted through Diwan's unique female gaze, making it a distinctive addition to the erotic drama genre.

Interestingly, “Emmanuelle” will not be part of this year's Venice Film Festival lineup, despite Diwan's previous win. Instead, the film will have its world premiere at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain this fall. French audiences can look forward to its release in cinemas on September 25th, 2024, while a U.S. release date has yet to be announced.

Produced by an impressive team including Reginald de Guillebon, Marion Delord, Edouard Weil, Brahim Chioua, Vincent Maraval, Livia Van Der Staay, and Laurence Clerc, and brought to life by Chantelouve, Rectangle Productions, and Goodfellas, this film is poised to make waves.

“Emmanuelle” is not just about revisiting a classic; it's about reimagining it for a contemporary audience. The combination of Diwan's directorial prowess and Merlant's compelling portrayal promises an erotic drama that is both steamy and introspective. Stay tuned for more updates as we eagerly await the release of this captivating film.
