Tom Hooper's directed adaptation stars Hugh Jackman as parole-breaking convict Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as the police officer pursuing him and Anne Hathaway as starving prostitute Fantine.
The film is based on the Broadway musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg, which was adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 novel.
