Breaking Dawn Searching For Director

Allan Ford December 8, 2011 2 comments
Breaking Dawn Gus Van Sant (Milk), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) and Bill Condon are reportedly in the running to direct Breaking Dawn, the final installment of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Kristen Stewart (Bella) has spoken up about the latest news regarding the candidates for Breaking Dawn director, confirming that the studio has really tried to get one of the said helmers.
“I'm glad that's out and about,” she told MTV in an interview. “I didn't know that was something that people knew. I think it's awesome. I think it's so cool that they're reaching. I think anyone of those people would be great.”
Co-star Robert Pattinson (Edward) would like two-time Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant, whose previous credits include Milk and Good Will Hunting, to take control of the final volume of the best-selling vampire series.
“I think Gus Van Sant would be great – he shoots everything in Portland. He's good at making it look beautiful,” he said.
Sofia Coppola and Bill Condon also have similar good reputations to Van Sant. The female helmer received an Academy Award nomination for directing 2003 Lost in Translation, while the 54-year-old filmmaker landed Directors Guild of America and Broadcast Film Critics Association nominations for Directing for 2006 Dreamgirls. A decision is not expected to be made until screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg delivers her detailed outline of the adaptation to director's next week. According to EW, Summit Entertainment plans to split the 756-page novel in two separate films to be shot back-to-back in mid-October. Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner are expected to return, but as of last month the studio was still hashing out the contracts necessary for an additional film. Both Stewart and Pattinson received $7.5 million to appear in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and Lautner recently received the same amount to star in Universal's Stretch Armstrong, making him the highest-paid teenager in Hollywood. Summit has declined to comment, and there has been no official confirmation from the filmmakers' publicists. The third Twilight movie, Eclipse is out in theaters on June 30th, this year.
