Lars von Trier’s Melancholia

Fiona December 8, 2011 Add a Comment
Danish director Lars von Trier held a press conference to announce that his movies will have “No more happy endings!”

Lars von Trier

So, as you see, looks that even his upcoming project, titled Melancholia will have the same treatment. And what kind of “happy end” could we expect to see with something that's already being described as “a psychological disaster movie” and “a beautiful movie about the end of the world”? Filming began on 22nd July in Trollhattan, Sweden and will continue right up until early September. Yes, just in time for next year's Cannes Film Festival. Movie stars Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard, Jesper Christensen, Udo Kier, Brady Corbet and Cameron Spurr. We're all very curious about this project, but Melancholia team just refuses to share more details. Still, we had a chance to hear that: “There is a wedding and melancholia but I don't want to say any more than that” from director; although he explained that the characters played by Alexander Skarsgård and Kirsten Dunst will marry, then experience a ‘dramatic' end to their union. Sutherland added that the movie will have a “brutal honesty”, which he particularly likes in the director's films. He also said that he loved “filming ‘live', without any rehearsals”, a first-time experience in his career. On the other hand, Kirsten Dunst, who plays Gainsbourg's sister, described Melancholia as a “poetic film”. Filming of Melancholia will last until September 8, and, as we said, the film will be delivered for next year's Cannes Film Festival.
