Mickey Rourke as Rugby Player Gareth Thomas
Mickey Rourke has confirmed he will star in a new movie based on the true story of a gay rugby player.
Yeah, yeah, you read it correctly, a gay rugby player.
The actor met up with Welsh sports ace Gareth Thomas over the summer, prompting rumors the pair was set to bring the athlete's tale to the big screen – and the gossip is true!
“I read the story, it's one of the toughest, hardest sports… and to be a man that plays rugby that is gay, to live with that secret for the amount of years Gareth had, to perform at the high level he performed at, it takes a lot of courage.” Rourke said and added:
“When I met the rugby player, Gareth Thomas, this is one thing that he and I talked about. This is something that's really important. We're doing a movie about a man who plays rubgy who is gay.”
Rourke's last portraying of a troubled sportsman was The Wrestler, which earned him a shedload of awards and nominations.
Now, he will have an honor to portray guy who has “…6'3″ and 225 pounds of muscle. He's broken his nose five times, fractured both shoulders and lost eight teeth.
Sometimes he would slip out his false teeth when you weren't looking and deposit them in your pint of ale.
He's drunk his mates under the table and brawled by their side. He's been named to the Welsh national rugby team more times than any other man.”
When asked if he'd learn Welsh for the role, Mickey stated:
“I have no choice.”
As usual, we'll keep an eye on this story. We have no choice! Make sure you stay tuned!
